The past two weeks have flown by because we have been having WAY too much fun in the Art room!
Once I was certain my kids had the concept of texture completely down, we moved into our first leg of mosaic making, which has been creating our sparkly cement medallions :) The students were given the option to bring in their own objects from home to personalize their pieces, or they could utilize the stock pile of goodies I've been collecting from donors for the past four months.
If I haven't mentioned it enough yet, we are going to be creating and installing a large scale permanent mosaic mural in downtown Jacksonville this spring, and the students at JWJ will be the featured Artists! I could not be more excited about this project, and couldn't wait any longer to get started on our cement medallion pieces we will be adding to the wall!!!
After discussing the history of mosaic making, and learning about how this Art form has trickled down through the centuries, the students and I went even deeper down the rabbit hole as we studied the work of Philadelphia Artist, Isaiah Zagar, and his incredibly hypnotizing Magic Gardens.
The pieces we are creating now will serve as a cohesive background for our mural downtown, but we couldn't possibly make all these donations without also making a few mosaics to take home and brag about to our friends and family :) :) :)
Students created two or three cement pieces each, and selected which of these they would donate to the mural, and which they would take home. Check out the vast selection of tiles, stones, beads, marbles, mirrors, and MORE!!!
We talked about symmetry and radial symmetry, and how the items we chose for our design should display a sense of unity and balance in their composition. And boy, oh boy, y'all, these kids get it!!!
The next chapter in Ms. Holloway's Art room will be creating our very own ceramic tiles using clay next week, so be sure to come back and check out what we're brewing soooooon! Yay, ART!!!
