In the art room, the students have been super busy with their newest smartest artist vocabulary word ... RADIAL SYMMETRY. In first grade, we discussed how unlike regular symmetry where the piece is the SAME on both SIDES, with RADIAL SYMMETRY, their piece must be the SAME ALL THE WAY AROUND. We studied several Mandalas from eastern cultures, did some meditation, talked about lines, shapes and colors and set to work using stencils, CDs, scissors, and markers!
MEANWHILE .... In Second Grade .......
I read the students two richly illustrated and inspiring Native American books to introduce this lesson. We looked closely at what the Natives value and give thanks for, then we each said three things we are most thankful for in our lives. You would not believe the sweet innocent responses from some of these students, SMILES from ear to ear, here, y'all!
Science and art, folks!
And lastly, before I sign off for the festive feasting holiday this week, I must fill you in on the new crew that sort of created itself here in Ms. Holloway's art room ... The Art Homework Hangout Club, WHAT!!!! I have a select group of students that constantly come by my room in the mornings before class and want to talk and play and draw and just hang out. So .... I created the club to increase their passion for art by giving incentives! In order for these blossoming artists to hang out in the art room before school, they must complete an art based assignment at home the night before, hence the Art Homework Hangout Club name :)
We have had some pretty wacky homework assignments so far, but it's not all work ... we take some morning to just talk and play, too, of course! Art for Art's Sake!!!!
