IN FULL SWING!!!
1st, 3rd, and 4th periods have been working diligently on their ceramic bowls, mugs, plates, and a handful of other clay sculptures the past three weeks. They are turning out amazing!!!
Now, y'all know I am crazy about public art and community involvement. (Can't stop, won't stop!!!)
The Empty Bowls event is an annual community based fundraiser put on by the River City Food Bank, Feeding Northeast Florida, and local restaurants, and community leaders in Jacksonville. This year, the JWJ artists were generous (and creative) donors to the cause.
The students created two ceramic projects in class- one for themselves to take home, and another to donate to the Empty Bowls luncheon. I am so proud of these artists for participating in something larger than themselves and contributing their artwork to the betterment of others in our community. Meanwhile, 5th, 6th, and 7th periods have been diving deep into color theory and creating surrealist watercolor color wheel eyeballs to ring in the spooky month of October. Can't believe I've waited this long to post about these projects!
It helps having such helpful grading assistants too! These kids are the absolute BEST, y'all!!!
And what would an entire quarter be if there wasn't room for at least ONE Art-y Party in the books?!!
I received an excellent report from the substitute when I chaperoned the symphony field trip with Mr. Morgan, so that class was awarded for good behavior with an all out Holloway style "Art-y Party"!
Okay, so the most exciting news is yet to come!!! Our first public art adventure of the school year is here! The JWJ art crew has been invited as featured artists at the first ever "We Rise" festival next Saturday, October 13th at the Eastside Brotherhood building at 919 A. Philip Randolph Blvd.
We received our official invite to be featured artists as the JWJ art department has been working hard the last couple of years to be "on the map" in our continually expanding arts scene.
(Look out LaVilla, because JWJ is rising up!!!)
The event begins at 11am and runs until 8pm. I will be there early to set up and will stay a little past 8 to break down, clean and pack up. Originally, I brooke the shifts down into 3 hour chunks, but if you can't stay that long, no big deal ... And if you want to stay longer, the more, the merrier! You are welcome to join for any and all parts of the day. I created a sign in sheet in my classroom for students to sign up for specific 'stations' and 'shifts' throughout the day. SO! Here's what we got goin down ...
One tent will be set up for attendees to create mosaic medallions, and JWJ artists will be teaching the community how to make their own to take home. This tent involves mortar, broken tiles, mirrors, beads, and is a bit messy, but super duper fun!
Our other tent is going to be a painting booth where attendees are able to stop in and create a positive affirmation or mandala design onto smooth river rocks. Also very fun!
The coolest part of this festival is that six JWJ artists have been invited to paint a permanent mural on one side of the physical building that will stay there forever. These six artists will need relief from time to time as well as assistants to help clean their brushes, swap out paint buckets, and bring them water, and deliver constructive criticism, etc.
Lastly, there are several professional artists who will be doing live painting projects all over the grounds. These artists will be in need of assistants all day long, and would be happy to coach young artists who are eager to learn as long as they can also help them when they need it. This volunteer job involves handling spray paint cans which have unsafe fumes, fyi.
So, in a nutshell, folks, you've got options!
Any student in need of volunteer hours or extra credit should definitely attend this event. There will also be live dance performances, a rap off, a slam poetry showcase, food trucks, succulent workshops, singing, and hula hoop performances, among much more local cultural entertainment. Guys, this is going to be epic! And we are right in the heart of the excitement!
Please email me back if you or your child is able to fill any of the station time slots, and I will pencil you in. Wear a JWJ t shirt if you have one!!! We are here to represent how amazing our school is and the incredibly positive impact that art can have on a community.
