You guys!! I am just jumping right in on this one cuz it's a LOT, so hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

Strong focus on photography lately. Check out these incredibly unique points of view ...
This is the time of year when students get to sit back for a moment and celebrate all of their hard, creative efforts from the first three quarters of the school year. This is also time of year when art teachers go a little nutzo and start pulling their hair out because we have exhibition after exhibition after exhibition after exhibition after ... (well, you get it) ... Oh! And awards after awards after awards after ... yeah ...
And ya know what ... the exhibitions and the awards are worth every second of stress along the way!
Between January and May, the JWJ CAP students in Ms. Holloway's art room have about a dozen opportunities to display their artwork ALL over Jacksonville, and we take full advantage of them all !
In the classroom, we have been covering various periods (or as the students like to call them "isms") throughout art history. We begin by uncovering a few large posters and walking through the steps of describing what we see, analyzing what it means, interpreting what the artists might have intended, and then adding our own judgments or critiques for each piece.
Some classes were offered reward incentives to heighten the discussion debates and many students were jumping out of their seats to get a closer look at each individual selected artwork.
So, ummmm, yeah, we have fun!
There has been so much activity in AND outside of the classroom this past month, it's crazy! A few select art club-bers were commissioned to paint a pirate island themed mural in a private home over one weekend and they did an outstanding job!
Would any of you like the JWJ CAP artists to paint a mural for YOUR bedroom??? Let us know!
Meanwhile, the lunch and learn squad grew to the largest size all year as so many students were enthralled in making art competition submission deadlines and needed their lunch time to work on their masterpieces. Our JWJ/CAP list of award recipients reached an all time record high this year!
***We stop counting at this point, ya feel me?!*
We pulled in 27 awards in the regional Scholastics art competition! Second only to LaVilla SotA, wow!
JWJ CAP artists were awarded categories in drawing, painting, mixed media/ collage, animation, ceramics, fashion design, photography, and design. Way to cover all the bases, you guys!!!
Highlights from the month of January include:
- An incredible day face painting at Rise Church's annual winter festival with perfect weather
- Major progress on our Trailer Bridge mosaic skateboard deck project!!!
- Acceptance letter from Scholastics of award recipients
- Invite to showcase our student artwork in the gallery at UNF!!!!
- New exciting mural location .... details to come after spring break :) :) :)
- OH! And our club t-shirts finally arrived!
Most of y'all know that I am super great at being a cheerleader for my amazing students, (how could anybody NOT be, they're so darn awesome!) but one thing that does not come so easy is braggin on myself ... This month, I am told that I have to include this one personal art-teacherin' highlight though. I got to go to this fancy party downtown on the river and walk across a big stage and have my face on a huge screen for being Teacher of the Year. :) Not gonna lie, it was pretty cool. :)
Aaaaaaah, now that that's over, let's get back to the REAL superstars here!
Once our shirts arrived, we immediately got to tye-dying them (DUH!) And they look MAGNIFICENT!
During class, students have been plugging away at techniques like shading, contour lines, enlargement processes to scale, and so much more. I wish I could multiply into four humans so that I could keep y'all filled in on the daily accomplishments of all 318 students, but alas ... your monthly blog updates can only hold so many tidbits of awesomeness! So, soak it all in *and check out the IG!
Dearest to the art teacher's heart during the month would have to be the Trailer Bridge mosaic skateboard deck project. We received our second box of tiles and the artists got right back to work!
I mean, you guys, for REAL, how cool is this project??!?!
Please do not judge the state of (un)cleanliness in my storage closet, there's a LOT going on all day, every day, and it takes all we got just to remember where projects are even stored most of the time!
We are in the process of scheduling a field trip to the Trailer Bridge facility to hand deliver these decks and we are getting more and more excited by the day! Insert hugest smiling face picture here!
Okay, okay, okay, that's enough, right (sheeesh) So, I am leaving you all here with a sneak preview of just ONE of the many highlights for next month in February (((Because it's a BIG one!))) The JWJ CAP artists will be teaching not one, but TWO cross-curricular workshops to the community at the Jacksonville Maker's Faire at MOSH on the 15th and we hope to see you all there!
See you soon, stay in touch, and remember to #elevatethearts and that #theartsaddup :)
