The JWJ Art Club threw an epic "Art-y Party" for our last meeting of 2018- fully loaded with all five food groups (ha!), a slideshow photo recap of the first two quarters' adventures, some holiday tunes on blast, and (of course) an in-house mural comprised of RAINBOW DRIP PAINT in the hallway! :)
The 'Experimental Selfie' project produced some truly moving results. Several of the artists decided to use alternate backgrounds instead of the spinach emulsion, and I am really pleased with their work. Using bleeding tissue paper, the students created a tye-dye rainbow effect on watercolor paper, then mounted their packing tape transfers onto these backgrounds. See for yourself!!!
Teaching in a choice based style allows for these incredible young artists to explore what mediums, processes, and outcomes work best for them individually- as opposed to having each lesson plan be a step by step 'cookie cutter' project. I love giving students the freedom to find their own unique artistic paths and watching the amazing work that comes out of that exploration.
As a special treat to the hard working faculty at James Weldon Johnson, the art students created tree ornaments in all types of fun holiday shapes to give out as gifts in their teacher mailboxes.
As we close out each calendar year, there are always specific moments that stand out as 'forever memories' that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Teaching, learning from, and creating with my unbelievably talented, diverse group of students is one of my most cherished collection of memories. And as the year continues, I trust we will create a rich and colorful collection of more!
