Scotty Briggs is a Jacksonville native who has been 'painting our town' for over ten years. His work is bold, colorful, fun, and masterfully executed in a style that is recognizably all his own. Some of the kids knew a few of his pieces from seeing them in public spaces around the city. :) :) :)
First, we discussed different styles of fonts the students could work from, then he gave a short presentation on how to turn their boxed letters into three dimensional ones that seem to 'pop' right off the paper. (You'll notice that very often in Ms. Holloway's room, we incorporate cross curricular core subjects to create formulas for our art work by turning into "mathematician-artist-scientists"!)
You should have seen their faces when they added the 3D techniques to their names and initials!
It was super exciting for the kids to get to interact with a local artist from their own community and to hear about different occupations they might even consider, later in life, in the arts :)
Check out their progress for yourself!!!!
I am so looking forward to viewing the finished products from these amazing young artists!
Click on the image below for a downloadable link with the vocabulary we learned in this unit which will be on their first quiz. The students should have these terms already written down in their sketchbooks.
For A day, Quiz #1 will be on Friday, 9.16, and for B day, the quiz will be Monday, 9.19. I will be handing out a study guide next week in preparation.
And because his website is being worked on at the moment, I'm including a few of the local works made by our guest artist, Scotty Briggs. Maybe you've seen or can locate them around Jacksonville!
