Here at James Weldon Johnson middle school, we are all about building community and beautifying our surroundings through the power of public Art. You saw our "Dream Big" wall, but have you heard of "Project Brush Up" yet??!?!
"Project Brush Up" experienced lift off last Saturday at Main Street park right behind the downtown public library at the intersection of Main and Adams, and Main and Monroe streets.
This mosaic mural has been long in the works. If you follow the blog regularly, you'll remember many months back when two fabulous UNF students, Tylyn and Noelle, came to visit my classroom to help create mosaic medallions with the incredible JWJ Artists.
Tylyn and Noelle are the United Way grant recipients who invited JWJ Artists to design and create a public Art mural downtown that represents the way that young people in Jacksonville view their city.
In conjunction with the experienced mosaic master- dynamic duo, Kate and Kenny Rouh of RouxArt, the JWJ Artists have been diligently working on how to perfect their final designs for public display and installation downtown.
I will be adding in a line or two of mirror swirls above the waves, so watch out for that progress while we also begin to add in some of the students mosaic medallions and personal accent ceramic tiles from the kiln! This project has many layers, many steps, and just as many rewards!
