The Artists AT JWJ are cruisin right along into 2018 in stride!
We began a unit on Still Life drawings using oil pastels in an analogous color scheme. Students were given a collection of items to arrange in the center of their studio tables in an aesthetically pleasing and interesting way (and they all had to agree on this arrangement together!) Once their items were put together in a way that all Artists were happy with, we got our "finger viewfinders" and zoomed in or cropped out pieces of the composition in order to achieve the most dynamic view to draw from.
And it has been a minute since we discussed color theory, so before we jumped into the oil pastels, the Artists made sure to remember their 'color families' in order. This assignment was to be completed using only analogous colors, which here at JWJ, we all know means 'next door neighbor' colors on the color wheel :) My awesome young Kahlos and Rothkos were given their free choice of any three analogous colors to work with along with black and white for shadows and highlights.
Now, oil pastels aren't exactly the easiest medium to work with, and this was a pretty challenging project for a lot of the students, but I think their effort and patience proved to turn out some pretty amazing pieces ... What do y'all think???
.... which was .... then accompanied by Krispy Kreme donuts as a reward for doing our best and taking pride in our Smartest Artist knowledge (insert giggle here!!!)
Check back in soon to see the progress on our mosaic tiles for the JWJ downtown mural!!!
